Jim was born in Holdrege, Nebraska then lived in New York City, Panama, Michigan, and San Francisco as an “army brat” before returning to Hastings, Nebraska in third grade. He graduated from Hastings High School then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he served as President of his Fraternity, Beta Theta Pi. He then attended the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha where he received his MD degree. Following graduation he reported for Active Duty in the US Navy serving an Internship at the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego. He next attended the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute In Pensacola, Florida where he was designated a Naval Flight Surgeon and was honored with the Surgeon General’s Award for Student Excellence. He was then assigned to Attack Carrier Airwing Fifteen embarked in USS Coral Sea where he participated in the evacuation of Saigon and the rescue of the SS Mayaguez. During this period he accumulated over 250 hours in tactical jet aircraft and 26 arrested carrier landings.
In 1976 he returned to the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego for three years training as an Ophthalmology Resident. He next served as Chief of Ophthalmology at the Naval Hospital, Bremerton, Washington for two years before resigning from active duty and opening a private practice in Salt Lake City, Utah. Remaining in the Naval Reserve he was Commanding Officer of a Naval Reserve Hospital Unit for two years prior to relocating to North Platte, Nebraska in 1988. He was recalled to Active Duty in 1990 for Operation Desert Storm and following completion of that tour he retired from the Navy as a Captain after 22 years of service.
Dr. Shreck joined the North Platte Rotary Club in January 1989 and subsequently served multiple terms on the Club Board of Directors. He served as Centennial Club President for Rotary Year 2004-5 and three years as the District Rotary Foundation Chair. He and his wife, Annette are Major Donors to The Rotary Foundation. He is a Multiple-Paul Harris Fellow, a Sustaining Member of The Rotary Foundation, a member of the Paul Harris Society and a Benefactor to The Foundation. He has attended six Rotary International Conventions and sings in the RI Convention Choir. Annette is a Registered Nurse who was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. She is also a Paul Harris Fellow and a Benefactor. They have been married for 39 years and have three children (twin girls), two grandsons and twin granddaughters.
Dr. Shreck currently practices Medical and Surgical Ophthalmology in North Platte. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. Very active in his community, Dr. Shreck has served as President of the North Platte Chamber Ambassadors, the North Platte Country Club and the Heartland Singers. He is currently President of the Board of Directors of the North Platte Surgery Center. He has also served multiple terms on the North Platte Concert Society Board and has been a long time Delegate to the Nebraska Medical Association from the Lincoln County Medical Society. He has also served as the Alternate Counselor for the Nebraska Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. In his spare time he has been very active at the North Platte Community Playhouse both as an actor in many different roles and as a Director of three musicals. He currently sings with the Heartland Singers and the St. Patrick’s Church Choir.
